That said, we still need our space to transport, as the late, great George Carlin described as, “our stuff.” The auto manufacturers from Asia have introduced us to a few of their small boxy cars; however, in my opinion, the winner with the greatest attitude is the 2012 Kia Soul.

Kia launched the Soul in 2009 as a 2010 model. It was the first product from their new design leader, Peter Schreyer. His task was to morph the Kia lineup from dull to a dazzling style. With the Kia Soul he managed to make boxy look so cool and stylish. Kia’s new design theme is now reflected in their entire lineup.

The 2012 Kia Soul has arrived with a mid-cycle refresh with an updated look along with a more powerful and fuel-efficient powertrain. New for 2012: a new six-speed transmission, gasoline direct injection, a new Infinity premium audio system, new projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights that are slightly bulged, a redesigned hood and new front and rear bumpers. Add to that lineup, new and modern LED rear light clusters, and two new exotic exterior paint colors – Canyon and Moss.

New on the 2012 Soul and Soul Sport models is UVO powered by Microsoft®3 in-car hands-free communication and infotainment system. The available premium package includes heated front seats, leather seat trim, automatic climate control, navigation system (in lieu of UVO system), and push-button start for added upscale comforts..

The 2012 Kia Soul is available in three trim levels, base ($13,900), “+” ($16,300) and “!” ($19,600). The Base model comes standard with a 1.6L GDI 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The “+” and “!” are equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. An optional six-speed automatic transmission is available on the Base and “+” and standard on the “!”.

The new exterior styling may not be dramatically different from the original; however, has been enhanced to project a stronger stance, with a bit more bling. The roof line angles down, while the belt line angles upward delivering an in-motion feel even when the car sits still. The large rear hatch makes it easy to load and unload into the small cargo area. The major form of the Soul may be square, but this little model has lots of angles and curves. Flat, raised, and rounded wheel wells project out creating a side profile theme that is hip and fun.

The interior is populated with curved angles of décor trim bringing those hip elements inside the Soul. It is simple and functional with an ergonomic layout. The seats were comfortable and had SOUL stitched across each of the backrests. The interior improvements showed of increased attention to detail; fit and finish. One of the trick options that young drivers love is the rotating color front door speaker rims that bounce to the beat of the music or can be adjusted to stay one color. The lights can also be turned completely out when you want to remain anonymous. The rear seats can fold flat with a 60/40 split to increase your overall cargo room.

The most improved feature comes from the engine compartment. There are two choices – 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four cylinder engines. The 1.6L now has 138 horsepower (a 13% increase over last year), and the 2.0L jumps to 164hp (a 16% increase). Even with the increased horsepower, both engines deliver better fuel economy. Transmissions come in the form of a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. For 2012, Soul and Soul+ models offer an Eco package on the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter engines with automatic transmissions, which includes ISG technology for improved fuel economy and low-rolling-resistance tires. (ISG is an idle stop-and-go in which the car automatically turns the engine off at stops, and restarts when lifting your foot off the brake preparing to move again).

Room for improvement:

Plenty of road noise in the cabin

Cool Features:

Music thumping, lighted speaker rings

Hip styling

The standard safety equipment for every 2012 Kia Soul models includes: six airbags, active front headrests, LATCH seating system, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitor.

In Summary – When it comes to the boxy little vehicles of transportation, the 2012 Kia Soul has a hand up in the styling cool factor. It sits at a price point attracting buyers from an array of age groups. The Soul is an entertaining vehicle to get around in. With its improved power and fuel economy I am sure it will continue to be a hit for Kia. The Kia Soul is a funky urban commuter with personality and spunk.

In 1973 Honda introduced a tiny little car called the Civic. Thirty-nine years later, Honda launches the ninth generation of one of the company’s most popular vehicles in the all-new 2012 Civic. The 2012 Civic was originally scheduled to grow in length, but with fuel prices on the rise, Honda decided to keep this generation to a similar size as the past version. This decision delayed the launch of the ninth generation which was not helped by the devastating earthquake and tsunami occurrences.

Consumer Reports for the first time did not place the Civic on its Recommended List sighting cheap interior and other issues compared to some of its latest competitors. However, my impression was that even though some of the touch-points of the dash were a little harder than I would have liked, the overall interior of my test Civic HF featured an attractive design, quality materials, and a colorful, futuristic instrument cluster. Knowing Honda, they will seriously review the comments from Consumer Reports and make any necessary modifications to future model years.

The model lineup for the 2012 Honda Civic consists of DX Coupe ($15,605), LX Coupe ($18,455), EX Coupe ($19,705), EX-L Coupe ($21,955), Si Coupe ($22,205), DX Sedan, LX Sedan ($15,805), HF Sedan ($19,455), EX Sedan ($20,505), EX-L Sedan ($21,955), Si Sedan ($22,405), Hybrid Sedan ($24,050), and Civic Natural Gas ($26,155).

New features on the 2012 Honda Civic include intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID), USB Audio Interface, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, and a Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition and FM Traffic.

Even though the 2012 Civic is classified as all-new, the overall sheet metal hasn’t changed much compared to the eighth generation. The differences show themselves in redesigned fascias, expressive mono-form exterior styling with clean and flowing lines, and an updated rear end. The sedans get a side profile that is less cab-forward looking, while the coupes carry on with the more shapely style. The sporty SI trim is tricked out in spoilers and a body kit.

Honda describes the body styling as a futuristic and distinctive compact. However you want to portray its unique look, the Civic draws buyers from high school graduates to young families to baby boomers and retirees.

The interior is comfortable and continues with some of the previous generation design cues. The seats are firm, nicely bolstered, and easily adjusted. Thinner windshield pillars improve the forward viewing area. A new I-MID or Intelligent Multi-Information Display allows the driver to rotate through a variety of vehicle information. The optional satellite navigation system now includes a voice recognition function.

Under the hood you’ll find a re-engineered 1.8-liter I-4 engine with enhanced fuel economy, a larger and more powerful 2.4-liter I-4 Si powerplant, and a new Civic Hybrid powertrain that delivers higher overall performance and improved fuel economy. If you are not interested in going for a Hybrid, the HF is equipped with a specially tuned 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that generates slightly higher fuel economy ratings at 29 City and 41 Highway. There are two transmissions that are available on the 2012 Civic – 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic with overdrive.

The 2012 Civic delivers a contemporary driving impression that you would expect from a small family car. It is quick off the line, but don’t expect race car acceleration. The handling is what we expect from a Civic – confident with excellent ride quality. The overall length is about the same as the 2011 model; however, the wheelbase is slightly shorter.

Room for improvement:

Considerable body roll during hard cornering

Cool Features:

Dual Winged lights in dash indicating the driving eco mode

Voice recognition function on the optional satellite navigation system

The standard safety equipments for all the 2012 Honda Civic includes the Honda-exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE)™ body structure for frontal collision energy management and vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility, side curtain airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and anti-lock braking.

In Summary – Between 1973 and 2010, Honda has sold 8.8 million Civics in the United States and will continue to sell more with the new 2012 Civic. Its slick styling, durability, comfortable interior, and great fuel economy will keep the Civic as a top-selling model on the Honda dealership showroom floors. With its wide variety of trims, I’m sure there is a version that will meet the qualification of folks looking for a smaller, yet fun vehicle.

Nissan introduced the Rogue compact crossover back in 2008. The 2012 Nissan Rogue compact SUV is pretty much a carryover of the 2011 Rogue that was refreshed mid-cycle. For 2012 the Rogue receives a new grille and front fascia, chrome-accented door moldings, rear spoiler, new color options and new features including Bluetooth and a USB port.

The 2012 Rogue is placed between the larger Nissan Murano and the smaller Nissan Juke. The styling has remained true to itself over the previous four years. A redesigned version is due next year as a 2013 model.

The 2012 Nissan Rogue is offered in two trims: S, and SV. All models come standard with front-wheel drive and an optional all-wheel drive system. Nissan Rogue crossover SUV adds a new Special Edition package for 2012, along with revised content for the various option packages. The Rogue is one of the best-selling vehicles in the Nissan lineup.

The new high-value Special Edition package ($1,200) includes steering wheel audio controls, Rear View Monitor, 4.3-inch audio display, USB connectivity, satellite radio, fog lights, and privacy glass. Other enhancements for 2012 include the addition of a new “Sport Mode” switch on all models, new 17-inch (SV) and 16-inch (Special Edition) aluminum-alloy wheels, and one new exterior color, Graphite Blue. Also, the SL Package adds the innovative Around View® Monitor.

The Rogue is among the lengthiest compact crossovers. Nissan describes the exterior as “an image of modern sophistication.” I would say the styling follows the general Nissan conservative theme; this is not to say that it is boring. This vehicle is actually quite nice; just not over-the-top. The front and rear wheel wells have dramatic arches with a belt line that sweeps upward at the rear creating a line that meets up with the swooping roofline.

The Rogue which seats five has a rather spacious interior for the front passengers and average for those in the rear. The cargo capacity ranges from 28.9 cubic feet to 57.9 cubic feet with the second row seat folded down. The interior was fairly comfortable with soft points on a rounded dash. Controls were easy to access and use with silver trim.

Performance on the Rogue comes in the form of one engine offering: 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder that delivers 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The engine is tuned to provide ample torque in the low-to-mid rpm range for a smooth and powerful acceleration. Every Rogue trim comes standard with Nissan’s Xtronic CVT™. A new Sport Mode switch is added for 2012. Fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg City and 28 mpg highway for the front wheel drive models and 22 city/26 highway for the all-wheel drive models.

Room for improvement:

Maximum cargo volume could be improved

Cool Features:

Has your time come to ignite an eight-cylinder supercharged super luxury sedan? Have you had enough of the beautiful yet abundant Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus models that are in every other driveway? Are you looking to stand out in a crowd and show your neighbors, co-workers and the rest of the world that you have class and intrigue like no other? If so, then your next trip should be to a Jaguar dealership to test drive the all-new 2012 Jaguar XJL sedan.

After 41 years of having the same basic body design, Jaguar takes a bold step to transform its flagship XJ into a restructured work of art. After sales of the XJ began to decline, the team at Jaguar decided to juice up their iconic sedan with revolutionary changes to the XJ’s exterior and interior design.

The all-new XJL is a long-wheelbase version of the XJ with a new “Executive Pack” that transforms the rear of the XJL into a mobile office with fold-down business trays, an electric rear sunblind and reclining rear seat.

The 2012 XJ and XJL body panels are forged from aluminum which delivers a light curb weight starting around 4,000 lbs. for the base model. The sides come straight down and the roofline extends back far over the trunk. The hood, front driving lights, grille and spoiler pose a sculptured elegance. The overall design is as animalistic and muscular as the wild Jaguar as its name sake.

The organic lines and sloping roofline establish the agile and grace expected from the luxury brand. The standard glass top has two fully functioning sunroofs that generate an environment of openness and light. The XJL may just be the new standard of luxurious prominence.

The full model lineup for the XJ is as follows: XJ ($73,700), XJL Portfolio ($80,700), XJ Supercharged ($88,600), XJL Supercharged ($91,600, XJ Supersport ($111,200) and the XJL Supersport ($117,700). I had the extreme pleasure of having the XJL Supersport trim as my test vehicle. I was living large and receiving the nods of approval and envy during my week long test drive. What a car!

The incredible performance of the XJ comes from three engine choices. The XJL Supersport manifests its power from a 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine that produces 510 horsepower and 461 lbs-ft of torque. The other two supercharged models pound out 470-hp and 424 ft-lbs of torque. The non-supercharged versions of the XJ come standard with a 5.0-liter V8 with 385-hp and 380 lbs-ft of torque.

The interior of my XJL Supersport test model had more leather than my living room. The opulent cabin design flows with the elegance expected from a super-luxury car priced twice as much as the XJL. This includes every detail of the interior, from the two-tone butter-soft hides to the walnut and piano black trim.

The front seats were incredibly comfortable and include a massage feature. Replacing your standard gauges is a 12.3-inch high-definition virtual instrument cluster graphically displaying the speedometer, fuel, temperature and more. A thin band of walnut curl veneer trim encircled the dash merging graciously into a prominent 5-inch strip on the doors. The steering wheel is composed of wood trim and leather with a multitude of controls. An innovated 8-inch touch-screen is used to assist with the radio and environmental controls as well as navigation and backup camera.

The rear compartment of the XJL Supersport was as cozy as the front complete with lighted vanity mirrors and drop down tables on each side. An electric rear window shade for additional privacy with heated and reclining rear seats are superior features. As you would expect since the “L” in XJL stands for length, the rear legroom was plentiful. To increase your comfort even more, rear passengers have individual heating and cooling controls, seat temperature controls, and a removable foot rest.

Premium surround-sound options include the top-of-the-range 1200W Bowers & Wilkins® system that is comparable in audio quality to the best in-home entertainment. Advanced infotainment features also include hard-drive based audio and navigation systems and comprehensive connectivity for portable audio and video devices via the powerful Media Hub.

Room for improvement:

Poor fuel economy at 12 City and 17 Highway

Cool Features:

Massaging Seats

Panoramic Glass Roof

SmartKey Keyless Entry and Start

The standard safety equipments for all the 2012 Jaguar XJ includes Xenon front and LED rear lights, traction and stability control, antilock brakes, alarm and engine immobilizer, side curtain airbags, front side airbags, tire pressure monitor system, blind spot warning system and active head restraints. The optional adaptive cruise control provides boosted emergency brake assist and a forward collision alert system.

In Summary – My conclusion is that the 2012 Jaguar XJL would make Jaguar’s founder, Sir William Lyons, incredibly proud and wish he was around for a behind-the-wheel experience. Despite the radical design change, sale numbers are proving that timing was everything when they brought the XJ into the 21st Century in both appearance and electronic proficiency. In terms of luxury, technology, and build quality, I wouldn’t hesitate to compare the XJL against the Bentley Flying Spur, BMW 7-Series or the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In my humble opinion, the 2012 XJL Supersport tops the list.

Have you ever wanted to take the road less traveled or traverse up a hill just to get to the other side? But wait; there is another side to your driving adventurist-self that involves trips to work, the store, and the opera. Perhaps it’s in the need to show that you appreciate how you get there versus just getting there. You possess the desire to blend go-anywhere skills with high-tech comfort attributes. If this describes you then the 2011 Land Rover LR4 is calling to you.

The Land Rover LR4 was redesigned in 2010 and grew up from the previous generation known as the LR3. For 2011 the exterior remains mostly unchanged. With an upgraded interior, a new engine, a fresher exterior, and enhancements to the Terrain Response system, the 2011 LR4 is ready to take on the toughest terrain with an almost auto-like ride.

The model lineup for the 2011 Land Rover LR4 is as follows: LR4 (47,650), LR4 HSE ($52,750) and the HSE LUX ($57,665). The two HSE versions come in a 7-passenger configuration. You can add the 7-Seat Comfort package to the base model for $1,150, which includes a third row of flat-folding seats, head curtain airbags, map lights, climate controls, and an accessory power outlet.

The LR4 is probably the most conservative in styling of the Land Rover models, but still pulls off a beautiful unique profile. It continues the tall boxy shape of the LR3, but with rounder lines and angles. The design is a big improvement over the LR3 granting a more powerful presence in part due to the large fender flares. The raised roof in my test model had three sunroofs and the rear side windows extended all the way to the top of the raised-rear roof line. The LR4 grille features two horizontal bars with stretched honey-comb like cavities. Large square blocks of glass with round inserted headlamps stand guard on both sides of the grille. Chrome side vents add a flare of sportiness.

The wheels are extended outward creating short front and rear overhangs to avoid damage during an off-road rugged terrain adventure. New for 2011 are enhancements to the Terrain Response system including the new Hill Start Assist and the Gradient Acceleration Control. There are several other new standard options and features to enjoy.

The interior of the LR4 has been upgraded tremendously replacing cheap plastic trim with a leather-trimmed dash with rich wood trim, softer touch materials and improved placement of controls and knobs. In other words, the LR4 receives high marks for comfort, luxury, and utility. The quality of the fit, finish and materials are outstanding. The leather seats are comfortable and the LR4 has an innovated 35/30/35 split for the second row seats with each section folding flat.

The door panels are a combination of wood and chrome trim with big bold handles to either close the door or hold on tight while venturing off-road. The keyless entry system with Perimetric Sensing Security system can remain in your pocket or purse as the LR4 has push button start. The optional surround camera system uses five cameras – two facing forward, one on either side of the truck facing down, and one at the rear to give an approximate 360-degree view.

The Land Rover LR4 is equipped with the new 5.0-liter DOHC V8 with direct fuel injection and variable camshaft timing that launched on the 2010 model. It produces a respectable 375 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission than can be placed in Normal, Sport and Manual modes and the electronic two-speed transfer case can be shifted on the fly. All-wheel drive is standard.

The suspension uses electronically controlled air springs and shock absorbers. The ride is smooth and the steering is responsive especially for a vehicle as tall as the LR4. The Terrain Response system has five settings: Highway, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl.

Room for improvement:

Poor fuel economy at 12 City and 17 Highway

Cool Features:

The Terrain Response System

Nine Speaker Harman Kardon Sound System

Start Ignition Button

The Land Rover LR4 safety equipment includes six airbags (eight with third-row seats), Dynamic Stability Control, Collision-activated inertia switch, ABS with Electronic Brake force distribution, Emergency Brake Assist, and tire pressure monitor system.

In Summary – The 2011 Land Rover LR4 with a starting sticker price below the $50,000 mark truly feels like a premium luxury vehicle. It comes with a long list of standard features and high-tech components including Bluetooth connectivity and a navigation system with off-road features. If you are looking for an extremely capable off-road vehicle with a combination of elegance and sportiness then check out the new 2011 Land Rover LR4.

Life is more interesting when we can blend the better of two worlds. The automotive industry strives to create niche vehicles that take the characteristics of one segment and morph it with another. So, with a show of hands, who would love a vehicle that explores the off-road, showers you with the freedom of an open breeze blowing through your hair while the sun paints you with a new shade of tan? And did I mention, along with all of this attention, you are treated to the soft comforts of a car verses the rough making of an SUV?

Keep your hands up, I’m still counting. Well, for all of us who have passionately replied “yes,” under the direction of Nissan’s President, Carlos Ghosn, they have created a multi-climate combination with the all-new 2011 Murano CrossCabriolet convertible crossover. All-wheel drive is standard on the Murano CrossCabriolet.

The 2011 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet AWD is packaged as a fully-loaded one model trim with the only option being camel-colored leather. Standard equipment includes leather seating, dual-zone climate control, navigation system with XM traffic, 9.3 GB MusicBox hard drive, Bose 8-speaker audio system, rearview camera, heated seats and steering wheel, remote entry, bi-xenon projector beam headlamps, heated seats and mirrors, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

With every trip I took in the Murano CrossCabriolet, the vehicle attracted on-lookers and inquiries. My son, Chase, and I, while cruising garage sales with the top down and wearing cool shades, at every stop we entertained questions about the car and accepted compliments. Chase, three years old, asked me “Dad, why does everyone want to talk to us about this car?” My reply was, “Because they have never seen such a unique-looking vehicle!” My little unscientific survey produced big thumbs-up accolades and smiles from both sexes. It seems Nissan got it right.

The designers at Nissan took the existing four-door all-wheel-drive Murano crossover and carved out a convertible version. They eliminated the two rear doors, extended the front doors by nearly 8-inches to allow easier access to the rear seat, and incorporated a power convertible cloth top that neatly folds into the trunk and hides under a hard shell cover. The CrossCabriolet is a four-seater compared to the Murano’s five-person capacity.

The convertible top is a quality cloth with a fabric liner and is available in either beige or black. The CrossCabriolet converts from coupe to convertible in about 25 seconds. A thin skylight sits slightly above the rear window. The overall package generates a sporty profile with the top up or down.

The leather seats are extremely comfortable. The loss of the third rear passenger provides for two large seats. Rear legroom is snugger on the CrossCabriolet verses the four-door hardtop Murano, due to the space needed to store the convertible top. Your trunk space is also impacted when the top is stored away.

The dash is full of contours and dressed in all black or tan with many soft touch points. The center dash adds character. It functions as the main control area starting with a seven-inch screen for viewing the navigation system, radio, climate settings and backup camera. Below the monitor sits all of the knobs and buttons to operate all of those items as well as an additional storage area. The center console is trimmed in wood and includes two cup holders. The center arm-rest doubles as a dual layer storage area. The lockable glove box is quite roomy; being able to fit a laptop.

The power behind the Murano is Nissan’s 3.5-liter DOHV V6-engine generating 265 horsepower. Teamed with a second generation CVT transmission, it has good logic control and a low gear. The V6 had plenty of power and effortlessly got me into the flow of freeway traffic, while the handling around tight corners was only fair. There’s no manual shift mode with the CVT, which was fine with me. The second gen CVT uses what Nissan calls Adaptive Shift Control to deliver a sporty experience, which worked out great.

Room for improvement:

A slight rattle emerged from somewhere in the cloth top, but was easily drowned out by the Bose audio system.

Cool Features:

Power Convertible Top

Unique styling

Start Ignition Button

The Murano CrossCabriolet safety equipment includes dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags in front, door-mounted airbag curtains with rollover sensor, pop-up roll bars for rear passengers, active headrests in front, anti-lock brakes, Vehicle Dynamic Control with traction control, tire pressure monitor, and all-wheel drive.

In Summary – The 2011 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet is priced at $46,390. What that price gives you is a vehicle that scores high for originality and provides the versatility to handle your driving SUV needs truly in a different fashion than anything else on the market. With a comfortable interior, good power, stylish exterior and all-wheel drive; the 2011 Murano CrossCabriolet is ready to handle your every driving need. So jump in, put the top down, sport the shades, toss the hair spray out the window, and watch your “cool- meter” climb!

How long has it been since Italy has sold a car in the U.S.A. which was affordable to the masses? Answer: a very long time. With the merger of Fiat and Chrysler, Fiat now has a new distribution channel and a team that has launched their return. The first offering is the 2012 Fiat 500, a small four-passenger spirited bite-size of a car that is so fun to drive.

This little car is about the size of a Mini, minus about six-inches. I lost count on the number of people who commented on how cute the car was. When the first lady started her sentence with “oh how cute…” I thought she was talking about me until I realized the 500 out staged my new shirt! This time around, Fiat opted for rounded features and a retro interior to create its splash into this pint-size car market. I think I personally increased traffic to chiropractors with the constant wrenching of necks checking out this foreign micro-car whizzing by!

The 2012 Fiat 500 is available in three trims (Pop, Sport, and Lounge), with two body styles (hatchback and convertible). The convertible version or as Fiat calls it “Cabrio,” consists of a contemporary solution to the famous canvas roof of the original Cinquecento. The 500c features a premium dual layer multi-position power retractable cloth top that runs on rails between the edges of the roof. When you press the power button once it opens to a sunroof for the front occupants; press it again and it expands to include the rear passengers. One more click and it folds back to offer a full open-air view.

The base model is the Pop Hatchback starting at $15,500, which includes air conditioning, power windows and door locks, fabric seats, AM/FM/CD/MP3 radio, power heated mirrors, cruise control, 15-inch steel wheels and a five-speed manual transmission. An optional 6-speed automatic transmission is available for a $1,000. The Pop convertible jumps to $19,500.

The Sport trim ($17,500) adds a load of sporty features including firmer springs, rocker panel cladding, slightly flared fenders, tighter steering, 16-inch aluminum wheels, roof spoiler and more. Inside the Fiat 500 Sport the interior carries a Gray/Black color scheme, leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, six-speaker subwoofer, Bose sound system and hands-free Bluetooth ™ technology.

The Lounge hatchback version at $19,500 is the upscale version of the 500 which comes standard with the 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, a fixed glass roof, Sirius satellite radio, premium fabric seats, 15-inch aluminum wheels, and a lot of chrome trim. The Lounge Cabrio version starts at $23,500.

For a small car I never felt shoe-horned or cramped. The cabin had a very open feel and the front legroom was fine. Jumping in and out of the back seat to buckle my 3-year old son into his car seat wasn’t an issue; even though I did have to reposition the driver seat each time.

The Fiat 500 proves that inexpensive cars aren’t required to have economical looking interiors. The touch points, (steering wheel, seats, buttons, and gear shift), were soft and pleasing on contact. Some of the non-touch points (areas that you don’t frequently feel-like the dash), looked good but felt of the quality you would expect from a car priced in this range. The trunk, although small, is adequate for a few bags of groceries or packages. If the Cabrio top is in the full down position which hangs over the trunk top, any attempts to open the trunk, will result in the top automatically adjusting the canvas top upward, creating the clearance needed to open the trunk.

At 140-inches long, the Fiat 500 is more than one and one half feet shorter than the Ford Fiesta, and 11-inches shorter than the Toyota Yaris. With comparisons like these, math is more fun and stylish with the 500. All three trim levels have different driving characteristics. The Sport has a firm ride and quicker steering. The Pop with its standard manual transmission delivers a softer ride but is still fun. The Lounge also has a softer ride compared with the Sport and is easier to steer.

All three models are equipped with the same 1.4-liter engine that produces 101 horsepower and 98 foot-pounds of torque. Fiat’s famed MultiAir system is complex and helps increase fuel mileage (30 city / 38 Highway) but does require premium fuel. Being that the car is so light the 101 horses really keep the 500 running!
Room for improvement:

When the Cabrio top is in its full down position it blocks your view and makes it pretty difficult to see behind you

Cool Features:

Unique styling

Italian sport performance

The Fiat 500 might be small, but it still includes seven air bags, electronic stability control, reactive head restraints, ABS brakes and has earned a 5-star safety rating.

In Summary: Fiat is re-entering the U.S.market with one of the first 2012 models. The Fiat 500’s fresh new styling should help it do well in the new mini-compact car category against the likes of the Mini Cooper, and Smart Car. Fiat has come a long way since its previous offerings from years ago. This is a great car at a great price. If you’re looking for small, check out the big reasons to own a 2012 Fiat 500.
We’re on our way with the current modes of transportation available. Flying cars and morphing planes are estimated to cost around $220,000 and still have a long way to go to become main stream – if ever. The link with the Jetsons is that their vehicles ran on electricity and so does the All-New Chevrolet Volt.

The 2011 Chevy Volt has been a key project for General Motors to help propel them forward as a leader in the high-tech development of electrically-operated vehicles. The Volt is a hybrid, however, different than the customary hybrids that are powered by both a gas and an electric motor. All the power that drives the front wheels on the Volt come from an AC-current electric motor. There are two ways to charge the batteries that feed power to the electric power plant.

Drivers can charge the car using either a 110-volt plug or for a fast charge (about four-hours), a 240-volt charging station. Chevrolet claims your standard 110-volt outlet will fully charge the batteries in 10 to 12 hours and provide around 25 to 50 miles on a charge based on terrain, driving techniques and temperature at a fee of between $1.00 to $1.50 per day. My experience is that after a 12-hour charge, I personally experienced between 34 to 37 miles based on the dash read-out. For ease and convenience, merely plug the Volt in to a power outlet via a special plug and power unit provided with the car.

The second way to recharge the batteries is via the 1.4-liter gasoline motor, which kicks in when the system detects the batteries are getting low on “juice”. This is one of the main differences between the Volt and other hybrids; the gas engine never directly powers the wheels. The 84-horsepowered 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder extends the driving range by 350 miles. During my week of test driving the Volt, the gas gauge moved just slightly.

Chevrolet did an excellent job with the Volts power system. The transition is smooth as the engine quietly kicks in to charge the 288-cell-battery pack when needed. Having the second charging source allows you to make your trips in confidence not worrying if the batteries will go dead while being stuck in traffic or having to make a few last minute stops.

The model lineup is simple as the 4-door, 4-passenger Volt sedan ($41,000 including destination) comes in only one trim line. However, you can accessorize by adding a Premium package ($1,395) that includes heated front seats, perforated leather upholstery, premium door trim and leather-wrapped steering wheel, Rear Camera with Park Assist ($695) and polished alloy wheels ($595).

When the Volt concept was introduced four-years ago it was crafted with a beautiful futuristic profile. Over the development period with the goal of making the Volt as aerodynamically efficient as possible, the edges and lines took on a more rounded appeal, while continuing its distinguishable styling. The Volts wide stance and sculptured belt line delivers a performance-oriented stance.

The interior of my test model featured black door panels, dash and leather seats with bright silver appointments on the center console and around door switches, center cup holders, and door pulls. Smooth white plastic flows across the front of the center console and other parts of the trim. As you sit in the driver’s seat you are greeted with two large 7-inch high-resolution full-color screens. The first one is the reconfigurable graphic instrument panel featuring your speed, battery charge, fuel amount and other elements that help you drive as fuel efficiently as possible.

The second screen is located in the center stack and includes a touch screen display for radio, climate controls, navigation, and backup camera view. The start power-button located on the center console, jumps out with its bright blue glowing color with silver trim.

The two rear bucket seats are divided by a center console with cup holders. Both seats can be folded flat to provide more storage space. Rear legroom can be a bit tight if a tall driver or passenger is located up front, but otherwise is fine.

The driving impressions of the 2011 Chevy Volt are impressive. The chassis of the Volt is based on the new Chevrolet Cruze, which in itself is a very competent car. The Volts ABS braking system is connected to the cars electrical system and used to help recharge the battery every time the car either brakes or the accelerator pedal is released. The handling, braking, and steering perform with confidence creating the comfortable ride you would expect from a mid-size sedan. Don’t expect a rocket out of the gate, however, the electric engine provided good performance.

Room for improvement:

The high price will limit the number of main-stream sales
Cool Features

Fuel savings electric motor

Extended range due to gas motor

High-Tech interior dash and center console

The Volts safety equipment includes crash-avoidance features including standard anti-lock brakes with traction control, StabiliTrak electronic stability control and advanced LED daytime running lamps. If a crash occurs, the OnStar system will automatically alert an OnStar advisor and summon help. Since the Volt operates so quietly in all-electric mode, a driver-activated feature sounds a noise to alert pedestrians, particularly those with visual impairments, in an intersection.

In Summary – The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is the first vehicle to offer such a unique power- plant option. The government is currently offering a $7,500 rebate, which brings the base price down to around $33,500. I enjoyed the great fuel economy and knowing that I wasn’t using a drop of gasoline most of the time. The Volt also attracted the attention of anyone in view as people attempted to figure out what they were staring at and then send over a thumbs-up response.

There are few times that a car rolls across my roadway that is too hot to let lay on the shelf. This review is just that. I had the opportunity to spend a week bathed in the beauty and power of the 2011 Jaguar XKR. We are talking about a car that is stunning in every way.

Jaguar, which was recently acquired by India’s Tata Motors, is continuing its efforts to bring us the sexiest and sportiest vehicles under one hundred grand. The 2011 Jaguar XKR is not only designed as a stunning work of art, it also has the power to accelerate to the league of pure performance driving wonders. The 2011 XKR is sleek, elegant, and ready to pounce at a moment’s notice.

For the 2011 model year, all Jaguar models come standard with Jaguar Platinum Coverage that includes 5 years or 50,000 miles complimentary scheduled maintenance, no cost replacement of basic wear and tear items, and 24/7 roadside assistance. Also, new is a special edition XKR175, 75th Anniversary Coupe with a limited production run of 175.

The 75th Anniversary Coupe offered only in Ultimate Black and with a less restrictive governor allowing for a top speed of 174 mph vs.155 mph. Aerodynamic enhancements to help distinguish this special edition includes red brake calipers – visible through the 20-inch “Kasuga” spoke wheels, new front and rear spoilers, rear diffuser, and side-sill extensions. Effects on the interior include charcoal leather accented with Cranberry stitching and piano black veneer trim, plus doorsill tread plates inscribed with “XKR175 – 1 of 175.”

The model lineup for the 2010 Jaguar XK consists of the following: XK Coupe, XK Convertible, XKR Coupe, XKR Convertible, and the XKR175 Coupe.

The XK series is designed by Ian Callum who previously designed for Aston Martin. This latest generation of XKs sports an Aston Martin flare for sure. The Jaguar XKR is built using an advanced aluminum architecture that creates a light, yet rigid and strong body. This helps reduce overall weight and optimize fuel economy. The flowing body lines rise up to voluptuous fenders that form the basis of the XKR’s powerful stance. The frontend of the XKR is cat-like, with the headlights focusing on you like cat eyes. The oval grille renders a nose and the lower spoiler vent and side vents, representing the mouth and fangs. The twin vents mounted on the hood completes the aggressive face.

From the rear the large hips are exaggerated by the outline of the small tailgate. The deep red tail-lights share space in both the rear fenders and tailgate. Chrome tipped exhaust pipes are fitted around a raised rear fascia. A rear spoiler is molded into the rear tailgate with an embedded third brake light. This is one beautiful sports car!

Sliding into the cool leather bucket seats is just the first step of becoming one with the cockpit of the 2011 XKR. The front seats hold you in place like a hand in a glove. The feel is a perfect blend of luxury and performance. You are surrounded by elements of wood, aluminum, and leather. At the push of a button the XKR engine roars and the shift control knob, trademarked as JaguarDrive Selector, raises from the center dash in preparation of being positioned to one of the drive settings.

On paper the XK series states it can hold up to four people. The reality is it is a two seater. My son’s child seat would not fit in the back seat. The rear legroom is a mere 27.6 inches – a fraction of a normal back seat. However, if you are buying an XKR its not about how many people you can carry, it’s about the performance. My XKR had heating and cooling front seats with the ability to adjust the front seat up to 16 different positions. The center stack houses a large LCD touch-screen that was not as easy to use as you might expect. The built-in navigation system worked fine and kept us on track. Adjusting the radio took a few more steps than I would have liked, but I did get used to the procedure. Despite the small hatch, the XKR actually has a very large trunk area.

Under the hood lies a 5.0-liter all-aluminum, 32-valve supercharged V8 featuring direct injection and 510 massive, wild horses with 461 ft lb. of torque. It maybe a carryover from the 2010 model but perfection is perfection. To say that the XKR flies when you press the accelerator is a true understatement. I had “one” occasion where I needed to accelerate quickly and the rush was more than exhilarating.

The XKR engine is the third generation 5.0-liter and the most advanced engine ever built by Jaguar. Even the naturally aspirated version in the XK produces 385-hp and 380 ft-lb of torque. The XKR Coupe can sprint from stop to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, thanks to the help of a twin vortex supercharger system with twin water intercoolers. Mated to the 5.0-liter power house is an electronically controlled, fully adaptive six-speed automatic transmission with Sequential Shift ™, which allows you to manually shift by operating steering-wheel shift paddles. The transmission is designed to be maintenance-free with “filled-for-life” fluid.

Room for improvement:

Very limited rear legroom

Touch screen usability

Cool Features:

510-HP Supercharged V8 engine

JaguarDrive Selector

Roll-over protection system deploys instantly (on convertible models)

Cat-like reflexes is how I would describe the suspension on the XKR. Both the XK and XKR models incorporate Jaguars Adaptive Dynamics active-damping system which optimizes handling agility and ride comfort. The system monitors body movement 100 times per second and wheel position 500 times per second. Also, automatically adjusts the suspension to provide the smoothest ride and best handling. The JaguarDrive control interface allows the driver to select from different driving modes including Normal, Winter, Track DSC, and DSC OFF. The result of all this technology and tech-talk is that the XK and the XKR feels like it can anticipate the road ahead, feeling solid and planted. The chassis is stiff, the steering is responsive, and the XKR maneuvers around corners with ease.

The 2011 Jaguar XKR isn’t just fast, it is also incredibly safe. All XK models are equipped with front, front side, and thorax airbags. To help prevent whiplash, the front head restraint system is designed to protect against your head bouncing back in the event of a rear impact. Other safety features include adaptive cruise control and advanced emergency brake assist which uses radar to help calculate distance of approach to the vehicle ahead. On the convertible models, the hidden roll-over protection system deploys instantly if sensors identify a risk.

In Summary – The 2011 Jaguar XKR is an icon in the automobile industry. Its ancestry began in the 1960’s with the XKE and was reborn with the XK series. The XKR is the ultimate model in the XK series and has a perfect blend of extraordinary performance, style, and luxury. If you are in the market for jet-rocket acceleration with tight handling and an incredible ride, the XKR needs to be on the top of your short list.
