The purpose of the Second Amendment explained so even liberal democrats can understand it.

In his Commentaries on the Constitution, Joseph Story, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1811 to 1845, whose writings have been used by courts for over 150 years as a guide on constitutional questions, wrote the following succinct statement concerning the purpose of the Second Amendment:

“One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms...”

“The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms had justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpations and arbitrary power of rulers; and it will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.”

This is the real reason they want you disarmed!

Pete,
Thank you. I appreciate your comments regarding my "Guns in America" article. As you know, there is considerable ignorance and a lack of historical perspective when it comes to the reasoning behind our Second Amendment. This is not an issue to be ignored as equally ignorant (and even some, possibly, intentionally misleading) politicians are moving aggressively toward disarming American citizens. Responsible gun owners like us must be pro-active in an effort to educate and inform those who have little or no familiarity regarding guns, about the important role firearms have in securing our freedoms. As the saying goes, "Gun control is not about guns, it's about control."

Aside from the larger issue of firearms being a fundamental tool to guarantee liberty, there is also the point of personal protection. By imposing limits upon what measures I may take (be it type of gun, magazine size or ammunition used) to protect my own life or the life of my wife or son, the government is denying me the most fundamental of all rights--the right to life itself. By imposing restrictions on the type(s) of gun I can own to defend myself, I am placed at a disadvantage toward criminals, who by definition, simply ignore "gun control" laws.

It is my hope that my article will prompt further discussion about this critical issue, and help to educate the uninformed and misinformed.
If you would like to share this article with others, you can refer them to our website, or, I would be happy to provide you with a pdf version that can easily be emailed.

Thanks again,
Eric Johnson

I just read the Guns in America article by Eric Johnson. I have to say that is one of the best written pieces that I have read in a long time. It says everything that I feel also. The truth is that the current administration knows that while the citizens are armed in america their agenda will not work. It is time that we let them know that we will not stand by and let them infringe on our constitutional rights. I have written many senators and congressmen about this issue and it is amazing how they all say the same thing. They all think guns are the problem and not the people. The 2nd amendment is not about hunting. It is about being able to stand up to a tyrannical government. Being a California native I am saddened on what this state has become. Thanks for a great written article.

Regards,
Pete Williams
