4-Wheeling in Capable Style!
There are SUV’s and then there are SUV’s. Many are designed more as people-haulers vs. adventure-seeking vehicles. In the case of the 2020 Land Rover Defender 110, it can assertively explore the road “not” traveled on Saturday, escort you to a Broadway play in voguish style on Sunday, and safely escort your kids to their private school the rest of the week.
Pricing and Trims
The 2020 Land Rover Defender is available in six trim levels: Standard ($51,250), S ($54,700), SE ($63,600), HSE ($69,700), First Edition ($70,000), and X ($82,250). At launch, the Defender 110 is obtainable with optional 5+2 seating and 4 Accessory packages (Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban), as well as an array of 170 individual accessories. A shorter wheelbase Defender 90 derivate will join the Defender team in the near future.
What’s New for 2020?
The All-new 2020 Land Rover Defender has been reimagined for the 21st century and enters the market with a flood of anticipation and refinement. Equipped with a new designed terrain response, twin-speed transfer box, locking center differential, (active rear and locking differential enables the Defender to manipulate various terrains with ease). An all-new interior and exterior that truly elevates the status of the Defender model.
Interior Highpoints
My test vehicle was the 2020 Land Rover Defender SE with a spacious and most unique interior I have experienced in an SUV. The center dash features a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ and debuts the new PIVI Pro infotainment system featuring an intuitive interface. The dash has an inimitable shelf that runs from near the steering column to the right side of the dash. The touchscreen (think of it as a thin tablet), is placed in the center of the dash (left side of the shelf), and is attached in front of the shelf in a way that stores items behind the tablet/screen. Backing up is made easy with a 360-degree camera setup and multiple views for on-road, off-road, and towing.
Customers can choose from three color combinations to personalize their interior. Material choices include Resolve textile on standard models while S and SE trims feature a mixture of grained leather and a durable robust woven textile. The HSE models upgrade to Windsor leather and the Defender X features Windsor leather in a combination with steel cut premium textile accent for enhanced durability. Customers also have options of veneers and finishes, which include a rugged rough-cut walnut or natural smoked dark-oak veneer.
The 2020 Defender 110 has more USB outlets than any other car I have ever seen. It also has an outlet in the back of both front seats, plus a 110 outlet in the cargo area. Besides having a sunroof that covers both of the front and back seats, you also have skylights at the back sides of the vehicle to help bring the beautiful outside, in.
Exterior Highlights
Land Rover curated a unique set of exclusive colors for the Defender that flows from the inside to the outside. To help protect the paint, the Defender offers an optional factory-fitted satin protective film. The 2020 Defender 110 takes the shape of the original boxy Defender and smooths the edges and wraps the sheet metal with a modern elegant silhouette that is beautiful, bold, and powerful.
With minimal front and rear overhangs, the Defender provides a smooth ride and improved off-road capabilities. Land Rover raised the position of the vehicle’s body structure by 0.8-in and relocated elements including the battery and cooling circuits to help provide a ground clearance of 11.5-inches. On the outside of the passenger-rear window was a small lockable storage box adding to the Defender’s creative look.
Performance Specs
Customers will be able to choose between a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder mild-hybrid electric powertrain. The 2.0L generates 296 horsepower and 295-foot pounds of torque, while the 3.0-liter with electric boost surges the horses to 395hp and the torque accelerates to 406 lb. ft. Both motors are teamed to an 8-speed automatic transmission with higher gear ratios on the 6-cylinder. All models come with a permanent 4-wheel drive with Terrain Response™ setup.
Cool Features:
- Tablet style 10-inch touch screen
- 110v inverter
- Massive amounts of USB ports
- Optional Online Pack for Wi-Fi
Safety & Integrity
As you can imagine, the safety list on the 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 is well-served. Without listing your expected items, the Defender has some distinctive safety features including 3-D surround camera designed to provide both a 360-degree view and a new 3-D exterior perspective views of the surrounding area for both on and off-road. The advanced system provides enhanced, augmented on-screen visualization when using Wade Sensing, and ClearSight Ground View transparent hood technology, to improve visibility of the vehicle’s surroundings. The rearview mirror manifests a 50-degree wider field of vision by removing the rear pillars and spare wheel from the driver’s line of sight. Blind Spot Assist comes standard with the available Driver Assist Pack that contains adaptive cruise control and rear pre-collision monitor systems.
In Summary – The All-New 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 ups the game in luxury/off-road capable SUV’s. It is equipped with both a hunger-for-making its own roads, with delivery, style, and comfort at the same time. The Defender is packed with matchless features and is available with a standard 6-speaker system or an optional 10 or 14-speaker subwoofer Meridian™ system. It has a distinctive profile prepared for any off-road adventure that this world throws at you!
