Does your baby or child have trouble sleeping? Are you running on empty because you are only getting a few hours of sleep at night? A rested child is a happy child and a rested parent is a patient parent. Trust me, I know! My son had the hardest time sleeping until we started implementing these six quick, simple changes around the house. It will be life changing for not only your child, but for YOU as well!!
1. Stop their screen time at least 2 hours before bedtime. Blue light emitted from electronic screens can delay the release of melatonin (which helps to induce sleep) and can throw off your child’s internal clock to a later schedule. Create a new bedtime routine that doesn’t include TV, tablets, or cell phones. Instead try a warm bubble bath and family story time.
2. Hang blackout curtains for their room. Light entering a child’s room can also decrease melatonin production. The darker the child’s room, the deeper they will sleep.
3. Turn off your computers, routers, and Wi-Fi at night. The radiofrequencies from these devices will also impair melatonin production and could possibly cause other sleep related issues. My 13-month-old son finally started sleeping through the night as soon as we started turning our Wi-Fi off at night. 4. Make sure your child’s bed is as far away from gas and electric meters, power lines and breaker boxes. Kids absorb and are affected by electromagnetic radiation at a much greater rate than adults. Check the surroundings of their bedroom to be sure that there isn’t a smart meter or any other electronic wiring that could be impacting your child’s brain and therefore their sleep.
5. Move all of the electronics in your child’s room to at least 3 to 4 feet from their bed. This includes baby monitors, sound machines, humidifiers, plug in alarm clocks, lamps, night lights, or any other electronic devices. The electromagnetic frequencies from these items become much less concentrated at a distance of around 3 to 4 feet. Therefore, helping your child to sleep with less electrical disruption.
6. Get your child checked by a gentle chiropractor. If there is tension in your baby or child’s spine or neck, they will often toss, turn, and be restless throughout the night. Just as us adults can when we are uncomfortable. A well-adjusted spine will promote relaxation and therefore better sleep.
Sleep deprived kids have trouble with memory, attention, and ability to learn new things. Give your child the best leg up possible and give these six quick tips a shot! Trust me, you’ll start sleeping like a baby too.
